Job description

Dexter Energy is an Amsterdam-based scale-up developing AI-powered forecasting and optimization solutions that help renewable energy companies thrive in short-term power markets. We’re passionate about accelerating the transition to a clean and affordable energy system: powering a world that runs on wind and solar instead of fossil fuels.

About the Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer to join our Renewables Optimization team. This team builds core trading optimization execution systems that help energy companies sell (or buy) energy from wind and solar assets across short-term markets.

Your mission: turn cutting-edge forecasting and optimization logic into robust, scalable software that makes smarter trading decisions, up to 36 hours ahead.

This is a great opportunity to work on a high-impact product with fast feedback loops: decisions made today can drive measurable value by tomorrow.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and run execution systems for cross-market energy trading of renewable assets.

  • Work closely with data scientists and quantitative trading analysts to translate strategies into production software.

  • Continue developing a backtesting framework to optimize trading strategies.

  • Build data integrations for our optimizer with internal systems (e.g. our forecasts) and external systems (e.g. API’s to execute trades).

  • Work on data engineering tasks to make trading data available for analytics (e.g., product monitoring, invoicing).

  • Continuously improve the quality, scalability, and maintainability of the codebase.

Job requirements

About You

Experience

  • 4+ years in software engineering in a collaborative team environment (bonus if you’ve worked in fast-moving or production-critical domains).

  • Able to independently deliver production-grade software (Python) in a data intensive domain.

  • Know how to handle complex data streams (API integrations, data pipelines, storage)

  • Comfortable with cloud-based deployments, CI/CD, and modern monitoring practices (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus, Sentry). Our stackshare: https://stackshare.io/dexter-energy-services/core-tech-stack

Mindset & Skills

  • Hands-on: You enjoy building data systems to create real-world results.

  • You’re pragmatic: able to balance engineering rigor with shipping quickly.

  • Curiosity: Genuinely interested in the world of (short-term) energy trading or financial markets.

  • You thrive in a dynamic environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with time series forecasting, optimization, or trading systems.

  • Familiarity with analytical tools like Google BQ, DBT and dashboarding tools (Lightdash or others).

  • Background in energy markets, renewables, or financial trading.

Why This Role?

  • Direct impact on one of Dexter’s core products with measurable business value.

  • High ownership in a small, senior, cross-functional team.

  • Opportunity to learn from experts across software, data science, and trading.

  • Work in a supportive, low-bureaucracy environment with focus time and deep work.

  • Modern tech stack and freedom to experiment with new tools.

  • We’ll encourage you to keep experimenting with latest best practices of AI-tools to improve coding.
