This position will be part of the Synergy team within the Product Department, working closely with Giuseppe Procaccianti (Data Science Manager), Fons de Leeuw (Lead Meteorological Engineer) and Tom de Ruijter (Lead Data Scientist).

As an Energy Meteorologist, you'll be at the forefront of our mission by applying knowledge about fundamental meteorology to the energy markets. This may include recent research like AI-based forecasts. Your work will result in actionable insights based on weather forecasts into how the energy markets react to short-term, rapidly changing meteorological phenomena. You'll drive the effective use of meteorological data, benchmarking the quality of multiple weather models and performing enhancements on features that have an high impact for predicting renewable energy generation. You'll work alongside meteorology, data science and quant power trading experts, performing research and development in collaboration with other product teams.


What you will be doing

  • Apply meteorology research in the context of energy trading e.g., extract information to generate signals or apply machine learning techniques to improve a forecast;

  • Benchmark weather forecasting models and perform experiments in order to determine added value for our products;

  • Collaborate with data scientists to integrate meteorological insights into the broader forecasting and trading models;

  • Stay up to date on relevant quantitative meteorology research.

Keep the energy flowing

To be successful in this role, you'll at least need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working with meteorological data in the energy trading context. For example:
    • 3+ years working experience in a quantitative role
    • 1+ years working experience at the intersection between operational power trading and quantitative meteorology
  • Proficiency in at least a portion of the Python data and machine learning ecosystem. This might include libraries and frameworks such as NumPy, pandas, xarray, scipy.
